How about composting ?

What is composting ?

Composting is the controlled thermophilic decomposition of organic materials such as, leaves, grass and food scraps by a variety of organisms.

Composting can be divided into three groups ;

  • backyard or home
  • vermi-composting
  • heat based composting

The three composting groups

  • Home composting is the natural degradation of yard trimmings, food scraps, wood ashes and other household organic waste.
  • Vermi-composting is the natural degradation of similar household organic waste, using the digestive process of worms.
  • Heat-based composting is preformed by municipal or commercial facilities that increase the rate of degradation using high temperatures.

Quick facts

  • Varying amounts of heat, water, air, and food produce different qualities of compost as a final product.
  • Composts produced by all three systems are crumbly, earth smelling, soil like materials with a variety of beneficial organisms.
  • One third or two thirds of the waste you produce can be composted.
  • By composting at home you are reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfills.
  • To make compost you need an equal amount of , green items and brown items.
