Composting is the controlled thermophilic decomposition of organic materials such as, leaves, grass and food scraps by a variety of organisms.
Composting can be divided into three groups ;
- backyard or home
- vermi-composting
- heat based composting
The three composting groups
- Home composting is the natural degradation of yard trimmings, food scraps, wood ashes and other household organic waste.
- Vermi-composting is the natural degradation of similar household organic waste, using the digestive process of worms.
- Heat-based composting is preformed by municipal or commercial facilities that increase the rate of degradation using high temperatures.

- Varying amounts of heat, water, air, and food produce different qualities of compost as a final product.
- Composts produced by all three systems are crumbly, earth smelling, soil like materials with a variety of beneficial organisms.
- One third or two thirds of the waste you produce can be composted.
- By composting at home you are reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfills.
- To make compost you need an equal amount of , green items and brown items.
